When AISCAT came into being, in 1966, both Italy's motorway system and that of the concession were in full and rapid evolution and this placed new and common problems before the concessionaires.

This framework and the consequent need to endow unity to diversity, to harmonise construction, operation and management systems, to provide concessionaires with studies and research of general interest, to assist them in their relations both with the Granting body, with those providing finance and with all bodies directly and indirectly concerned, highlighted the need to establish an Italian Association of Motorway and Tunnel Concessionaire Companies (AISCAT).

AISCAT therefore took and continues to take an interest in problems regarding the planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance and management of motorways and tunnels. In addition, it carries out studies and research in the field of safety, planning and transport economics with the primary aim of contributing to raise the level of service provided to the user and to represent the sector on every useful occasion.
